The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don’t have. – Woody Allen
One of the easiest and best changes you can make in life is to be grateful. It’s so easy to get caught up in feeling like you are not doing or being the person you are meant to be. Our society makes millions of dollars a year convincing you that you don’t have enough or are not enough. But, if you can block out those images and really look at yourself, you will see something different. The fact is that you are enough and wherever you are in your life is where you are meant to be.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more unless it is paralyzing you or making you sad. Wanting more should only be the drive that propels you to succeed. When you beat yourself down with it, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. You are enough. You were born with everything you need. Material things don’t say anything about you. They are merely things. If you chase them as proof of your happiness, you will find yourself unhappy even when you obtain them. Happiness is a choice. You choose it every day. The choices that you make in your life should be in support of your happiness. The career you choose, where you live, who your friends are and who you love are all choices that should be made to fuel your happiness instead of diminish it.
Instead of focusing on all the things you want or aren’t, why not pay attention instead to all the things that you are. Maybe, you’re really funny. Maybe, you dance really well. Maybe, you can draw really well. Maybe, you’re a great friend. There are so many wonderful things about yourself that you can focus on and be grateful for. Find those things that make your heart sing and do more of that. Find the things that you are grateful for. When you look at the world from a place of gratitude, it looks as if there are so many more opportunities to be happy. You can see the sun shining even when it’s behind the clouds. It may sound silly or naive, but I promise you that it makes life worth living.
“If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.”- Albert Einstein
